INDORE: After the ban imposed by Chhattisgarh government on medicines supplied by three city-based pharmaceutical companies in the wake of botched sterilizations in Bilaspur which claimed 13 lives, Madhya Pradesh government has decided to collect and test samples of banned medicines in its laboratory.

Chhattisgarh government had banned more than 12 medicines supplied by pharmaceutical companies from across the country and out of these around five medicines were supplied by three Indore-based pharmaceutical companies including Nandini Medical Labs Pvt Ltd, Zee Pharma and Kabra Drugs Ltd.

"We will collect samples of medicines, which were banned by Chhattisgarh government for test," said additional district magistrate Dilip Kumar adding that if medicines are banned by the state government then it becomes all the more important to get them tested in our laboratories. Some of the medicines banned by Chhattisgarh government are also supplied in Madhya Pradesh by the same companies.

Out of the three pharmaceutical companies which are under scanner Zee Pharma has already closed its operation three months ago and there is no trace of the owners of the firm. "We will try to track down the owners of the company and medicine supplied to Chhattisgarh government," said Kumar.

When TOI tried to contact Kabra Drugs Ltd through the contact number given on its website, one person picked up the phone and gave another number, which however was not functional. Later, even the previous number was not approachable.

Managing director of Nandini Medical Labs, Anil Kharia, whose company had supplied three medicines, claimed that nothing was wrong with their medicine and told TOI the his company is ready to undergo any test of medicines as may be required by any authority.

He said, "Two of the medicines were supplied to Chhattisgarh government in September 2013 and one was supplied in May 2014. The medicines were first tested in our lab and it was approved by Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation Limited (CGMSCL)," Kharia said.
